About this role
Company introduction We are seeking a Master Clay Modeler to support aerodynamic testing operations at a leading automotive facility. Role summary / purpose The Aerodynamic Clay Master Modeler is a highly skilled, hands-on specialist responsible for the precision fabrication, modification, and restoration of hybrid clay, rapid prototype and composite aerodynamic test models supporting wind tunnel testing. This agency role supports multiple vehicle programs and platforms, requiring flexibility for shift work and occasional weekend activity aligned to test schedules. The Master Modeler delivers high-precision surface sculpting, part fabrication, and model preparation for wind tunnel testing as well as supporting hardware changes during test sessions, operating with a high degree of independence while maintaining strict adherence to safety, security, and quality standards. Key responsibilities • Support wind tunnel testing activities, including shift work and weekend coverage as required by test scheduling • Prepare vehicles/models for wind tunnel testing, including installation and removal of test hardware • Perform clay modeling changes to vehicle surfaces to support aerodynamic development • Execute vehicle part changes, including grilles, mirrors, spoilers, underbody shields, tires and more • Fabricate parts from clay, foam core, metal, rapid prototyping or composites as needed to support test builds • Perform CNC clay milling operations to produce and refine surface geometry • Complete post-processing and assembly of 3D-printed components for installation on test models • Work in close partnership with Model Design Engineers, Program Engineers, and Wind Tunnel Operators to ensure test schedules, model integrity, and prototype confidentiality are upheld throughout the pre-test, active test, and post-test phases Requirements – education & experience • 5 years demonstrated expertise in automotive clay modeling and aerodynamic surface sculpting (A-surface development) • Hands-on experience with vehicle part changes (grilles, mirrors, spoilers, underbody shields, tires) and part fabrication from clay, foam core, and metal/aluminum • Experience with clay milling processes and post-processing/assembly of 3D-printed components • Ability to read and interpret test matrices, engineering modification requests, and CAD/geometry references • Strong time-management skills with the ability to operate independently, at pace, and under tight wind-tunnel scheduling windows • Working knowledge of, or willingness to be trained on, laser tracking, 3D scanning, and photogrammetry documentation processes • Own set of professional clay modeling tools • Strong communication skills for coordinating with Model Design Engineers, Program Engineers, and Wind Tunnel Operators • Ability to complete and comply with facility Job Safety Analysis (JSA) training and lockout/tagout procedures • High level of integrity regarding prototype confidentiality and security protocols • Availability and flexibility for shift work and weekend coverage as dictated by wind tunnel test schedules • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team atmosphere • High School Diploma / GED or Certification Program Required skills • 3D Modeling – Ability to open and review CAD files. Ability to create simple geometry a plus • Rapid Prototyping – Ability to finish process rapid prototype parts and manage machine operations. Abilit…
