Role summary / purpose The main function of a paralegal is to assist lawyers by researching legal precedent, investigating facts, or preparing legal documents. A typical paralegal is responsible for conducting research to support a legal proceeding, formulate a defense or to initiate legal action. Key responsibilities • Prepare correspondence and legal papers such as summonses, complaints, motions, responses, and subpoenas under the supervision of an attorney or a paralegal. • Review legal journals and assist with legal research. • Assist new lawyers with preparing documents for submission to the courts. • Assist attorneys in collecting information such as employment, medical, and other records. • Attend legal meetings, such as client interviews, hearings, or depositions, and take notes. • Organize and maintain law libraries, documents, and case files. • Prepare and process legal documents and papers, such as summonses, subpoenas, complaints, appeals, motions, and pretrial agreements. Requirements – education & experience • Associate's degree in paralegal studies or equivalent training required. • 0-2 years experience required. Required skills • Verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail, customer service and interpersonal skills. • Ability to work independently and manage time. • Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, and the democratic political process. • Proficiency with computer applications, such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
