About this role

Role summary / purpose Design Engineer position focused on powertrain and engine design. This is a hands-on designer role requiring expertise in engine combustion design and detail design of internal combustion engine (ICE) systems. Key responsibilities • Output typical design team deliverables such as 3D models, 2D drawings, technical reports, and instruction sheets using knowledge of design processes and standards • Attend routine Design Reviews and report key metrics of designs • Develop countermeasures to achieve design targets such as cost, mass, and fatigue strength based on evaluation and quotation results • Build relationships with key stakeholders including drivetrain and vehicle design teams, engine design, purchasing, and assembly plants • Project manage suppliers to ensure on-time delivery of quality parts in line with project milestones • Drive process improvements to advance design process capability and improve quality and on-time delivery of design deliverables • Benchmark similar designs to ensure competitiveness in cost and customer expectations • Local travel approximately 10% (1-2 times per month for 3-4 days) • Overtime approximately 20% Requirements – education & experience • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline • 4-7 years in automotive design and development with engine design focus • Demonstrable CAD skills and strong understanding of GD&T • Proficiency with Excel and PowerPoint • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills • Strong knowledge of conventional, hybrid, and electrified powertrains • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally • Team-oriented thinking and a "can-do" attitude • Valid driver's license with an acceptable motor vehicle record Required skills • CREO CAD software • GD&T expertise • Engine design and combustion system knowledge • Detail design of ICE peripheral systems such as lubrication, belt systems, timing chain covers, fuel systems, cooling systems, intake and exhaust systems Nice-to-have / preferred skills • Master of Science Degree in Engineering • Extensive engine design experience • Experience with WBDM and typical powertrain CAE design software (FEA, CFD, GT Power or similar) • Working knowledge of aluminum and iron castings, thermoplastics, stampings, and forgings • Hands-on experience with engine and powertrain assembly • Expertise in typical ICE and transmission manufacturing methods • Working knowledge of DRBFM • Working knowledge of Quality Management and Supply Chain Management principles • Experience working in multi-cultural environments • Experience with production engineering Employment details – type, location, hours Contract position based in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
