About this role
Role summary / purpose The main function of a design engineer is to develop and design manufactured products. A typical design engineer needs to combine artistic talent with research on product use, marketing, and materials to create the most functional and appealing product design. Key responsibilities • Responsible for developing math design solutions to meet subsystem and component requirements • Exercises creative solution development with specific technical direction from DLT or Senior Designer • Proficient in CAD Tools, Teamcenter, and has clear understanding of Standard Modeling Methods • Developing knowledge of Vehicle Development Process and the math fidelity of each cycle; SMT Design and Engineering Best Practices • Assists other designers with design tasks when required • Develops, refines, and finalizes Criteria and Sections • Complies with Design Standards and Best Practices • Applies manufacturability, Design for Assembly, and integration knowledge to parts and subsystem designs • Actively participates in design reviews with solutions and proposals • Documents and maintains material, mass, and other part specifications within the Math file • Completes NX Analysis for their subsystem. Applies results with support of the DLT or Senior Designer • Works closely with engineers and peers to achieve product design requirements • Integrates component and subsystem designs into systems • Keeps abreast of current product developments and trends in area of responsibility • Shares lessons learned with DLT, Manager and Designers and recommends updates to Best Practices • Creates math data (models) of moderately complex components and subsystems • Keeps Design Manager and DLT informed of project status, timing, and technical issues • Ensures high quality, on time math release of components and subsystems • Actively identifies new areas for learning and takes advantage of learning opportunities • Prepare sketches of ideas, detailed drawings, illustrations, artwork, or blueprints, using drafting instruments, paints and brushes, or computer-aided design equipment • Modify and refine designs, using working models, to conform with customer specifications, production limitations, or changes in design trends • Coordinate the look and function of product lines • Confer with engineering, marketing, production, or sales departments, or with customers, to establish and evaluate design concepts for manufactured products • Read publications, attend showings, and study competing products and design styles and motifs to obtain perspective and generate design concepts • Design graphic material for use as illustration or advertising on manufactured materials and packaging or containers Requirements – education & experience • Bachelor's degree in industrial design, architecture or engineering. Masters degree preferred • 5-7 years experience required • Must have NX experience Required skills • Proficient skill set in CAD (NX, Teamcenter, Vis Mockup, etc.), math release process, specifications, and data management • Interpersonal skills to work effectively with others including global partners • Proficient knowledge of product design concepts and manufacturing processes (i.e. injection molding, stamping, extrusion, machining, etc.) • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Vis Mockup • Analytical problem-solving skills • Basic understanding of Specifications and Release terms and systems • Strong oral and written com…
